What's in Store?

I will be honest. I'm feeling a bit distracted. I'm just not "feeling it". I don't know why, exactly. It happens every so often. Laundry piles up. Paper piles stack up. The school room needs organizing. The kitchen needs a good scrub. Bills need to be paid. "To-dos" need to be done. I start to get a bit overwhelmed and then I get distracted and I just don't feel like thinking about school.

On top of my own distractions, Daddy's work schedule just changed (unexpectedly) to Tuesday through Saturday. That means Monday is out for school. I need to rethink my schedule.

This week in particular, we went on our all day shopping extravaganza (groceries) yesterday. That was Monday. We have a pretty major field trip Thursday, so that day is out. It is currently 9:41 am on Tuesday and I'm not yet prepared. This Sunday is Easter and I have not figured out my plans or anything for that. So, if I'm lucky, we can possibly squeeze in some school Wednesday, Friday and maybe Saturday. We'll see.

Did I mention that I was feeling a bit distracted?

I look forward to the day that these girls are more responsible for their own education. That is the goal, of course. I want to raise independent, life-long learners. When that day comes, if Momma is distracted or has a to-do list that is just too long, then their educations will be able to continue without me.

But, today, in this season of our life, they are 7 and 9. I am trying to gradually hand more things over to them (well, the Hippie anyway). But, at this point, our school day revolves around Momma.

All of this to say that I make no guarantee that this plan will actually take place this week. I'm hoping it will. I just planned out the next term and I really needed to finish these things before we move on. But, it's a possibility that things won't quite work out exactly as I planned. Do they ever?

Anyway, here's a peek at what we have planned for this week (or next). These are basically the plans for the last week of our first term. Thanks for sticking with me this far, if you did. :)

What's in Store?

I took some time on Friday to figure out where we are in our homeschool and where we would like to be. I decided that since we have had 10 weeks of school since the start of the year, we would take these next two weeks to finish out any things I wanted to finish in the first term. I then planned the next two terms, but I'll get into that in another post. For now, I want to finish up our term on Robert Louis Stevenson, Renoir and the Opera. I want to get to lesson 60 in our Language Lessons books (there are 180 lessons, 3 terms, you get the idea), get to Moses in the Old Testament and I wanted to finish reading Twig. Here's a peek at what we have planned for this week.

I'd also like to take the girls over to the park for a picnic lunch one day before it gets so hot that I never want to go outside (considering it has been in the 80s steadily for weeks now, I'm afraid that time is coming faster than I want it to).

What's in Store?

After a week of Unschooling, I'm attempting to ease back into a bit more structure. We still have other things going on this week, so I needed to keep it pretty simple, but I do better when I have a plan in writing that I can print and then check off. You lucky folks get the benefit of seeing that plan. Here's what we have in store this week.

What's in Store?

From a simpler time in our lives ...

I'm sure you saw it coming.

Changes. From me, the Queen of Changes. Each time I start out "hard and heavy", I relax a bit and then the desire for more simplicity wiggles its way into my brain.

Don't get me wrong. Nothing about our homeschooling has been bad lately. The girls tell me they love everything we've been doing.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I'm sure that's what you're thinking. You're wondering why I can't leave well enough alone and just go with it.

Well, the only problem so far has been me, not them. I'm having trouble getting to everything I have planned. I'm feeling guilty when I can't get to it all. I'm feeling a bit disjointed. I'm feeling the desire for more SIMPLICITY. When that happens, I always find my way back to Waldorf. Thankfully, I've finally learned not to toss it all and start over. Don't worry. That's not at all what I'm doing. I've just been meditating on our studies and finding ways to simplify, that's all.

The girls love the materials, so we will still use them. Just a bit differently. And, I'm bringing some of the Waldorf back in. I can break all of that down in another post, but I thought I'd share our plans for the coming week first.

Family Work:

Morning:
Light a candle, say a prayer, read from The Children's Story Bible by Vos: New Testament Ch 22 (Parables of Jesus), Ch 33 (The Good Samaritan), The Parables of Jesus by Tomie dePaola

Bob Marley Day

Bob Marley's birthday is Monday, February 6th.

We celebrate it every year here in our home and school.

I thought I'd share with you some of our plans for school on Monday, "Bob Day".

This is one the girls look forward to every year!

What do you do in your family that is different from most people you know?

It is sort of a holiday, in the sense that we won't be following our usual schedule. But, we'll still manage to get in almost all of the subjects. Wanna know how? Take a peek below.

Breakfast (cooking): Momma's Ital Banana Porridge

Read Aloud: We'll read from this precious book that we already own.

Poetry: We'll read several of the poems in this beautiful book by Tony Medina, I and I Bob Marley.

Baking:  We'll bake some authentic Jamaican Coco Bread together, enjoy some for a snack and again with our dinner.

Music:  This one is beyond easy in our home. We might listen to any one of his many CDs. We will most certainly play our Bob Marley The Legend Live (Santa Barbara County Bowl November 25th, 1979) DVD. We might even pop in our Bob Marley Legend (the best of Bob Marley and the Wailers) DVD. The girls will probably join in on the djembe or the cajon.

Art: We'll do some picture study on the beautiful paintings in our books and then spend some time doing wet-on-wet watercolor painting with only RED, YELLOW and GREEN.

Geography:  We will find Jamaica on the globe and look for Kingston and Trenchtown on a map of Jamaica.

Dinner:  We'll enjoy some of Momma's Jamaican Rice-n-Peas, Spinach with Coconut Milk and that fresh Coco Bread we baked for dinner.

...

And, just to make me feel better, we'll squeeze in some Dreambox Math. I think that will round out the day quite nicely. How many holidays can you fit in reading, math, geography, poetry, music, art, art appreciation, cooking, baking and literature?

Don't you just love homeschooling? I know I sure do!

What's in Store?

After a short meeting with the girls this morning (over tea with honey & cream), I feel confident that our new-found way of doing school is going well. I went through each subject specifically and got a resounding YES each time I asked if they liked what we were doing (except for Language Lessons or anything related to copywork for the Hippie. But, I firmly told her she'd just have to get over it because that was the way she would be learning language arts. Period). As the old saying goes, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. So, we won't be "fixing" much. I did, however, make an executive decision (that we discussed this morning and they both agreed with) that instead of reading a chapter every day from the Bible, we would only read specific stories, one per week and draw pictures from them and copy one line from them, creating a Bible book filled with drawings and words from the stories of the year. This is my Waldorf roots coming through, allowing them to really work with the stories and feel them rather than rushing through the Bible just to finish by some arbitrary deadline. Anyway, short story long, I thought I'd share our plans for week three. We will have three days of "lesson plans", one day with our Homeschool group and one day of all day grocery shopping (we only hit up Walmart and Whole Foods once a month and the girls and I have grown to look forward to this "girls' date").

Family Work:

The Children's Story Bible by Vos: Jacob's Dream (Read, Draw, Copy)

Child's Garden of Verses: Read poems daily
Recitation: Work on memorizing Family Rules, begin Psalm 23
Child's History of the World Ch 2 (read, narrate, timeline)
Life in the Great Ice Age, Ch 1 & 2
Holling Book of Indians Ch 2 (Read & Draw), Ch 3 (Read)

Picture Study: Renoir's "Boating on the Seine"
Music: Listen the "The Orchestra" book on Audio
Little House in the Big Woods, 3 chapters
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, 3-4 chapters

As far as the girls' individual work, we'll be on a "do the next thing" sort of schedule. There's really no planning needed here. They just need to work at it daily. Here's what they girls have in store:

The Princess (primarily guided work with me):

Delightful Reading Lessons, 2 this week
Read aloud to me, 10 minutes per day (for practice)

Assigned Reading: The Family Under the Bridge, Ch 1-3

We also have a Valentine Craft Day scheduled to make Valentines for the elderly that we will deliver as well as our weekly Waldorf Handwork Group, where both girls are learning to cross-stitch. Should be an exciting and educational week.
