Nature Study with Daddy

I guess you could say that our school year has begun. It didn't start with a big bang or any special day (like I originally intended). But, it has begun. Maybe we'll do some of that special stuff today ... or tomorrow. Either way, yesterday marked the "First Day" of the 2012-2013 school year. Actually, now that I think about it, it was special. Daddy was the teacher (which is never the case). The day consisted of a morning Nature Study session on the beach, snack, chores, lunch, an afternoon Surfing Lesson on the beach, dinner and an evening game of Uno and an impromptu Shuffling Lesson at the kitchen table. The day was nicely rounded out with a bit of reading ~ The Hippie read Freckle Juice by Judy Blume and the Princess started Prairie Friends by Nancy Levinson.

Pretty Fan Shell
The plants are HUGE ... they must be happy in the fall (so say the girls).

There were TONS of centipedes!

Flowers growing in the sand

Beetle in the sand

"Levitating Poop" ... funny girls.

Crab hole

Barnacle drift wood

Can you spot the crab?

What about now?

I know that you are well into your own school year (keep in mind that we took the month of September to explore another continent), but how's it going?

Until next time,

  1. WOW! How neat! I love how your nature finds are so different then ours, due to our different locations...we are in the midst of leaves, catapillars hunkering down, and cold winds blowing in and through everything!

Our learning is going good but slow...did you see that Librivox as This Country of Ours up to Chapter 63 available to listen too? That's exciting to me! :-)

  2. This may be a long shot. I came across your blog bc of a post on a SCM forum about HUFI curriculum years ago. I am in a very similar situation that you were in, where I like the scope/sequence of HUFI, but think doing school together may be better. I have four daughters (9, 8, 6, 3). I realize yours are all grown up now, but how did it turn out? What did you do? Did they graduate using a CM curriculum? Any advice you would give? My name is Logan & you can email me at lemf87@gmail.com...if you see this! haha!

ps- I love the idea of scheduling hair brushing.. that's a great tip I've gained from your blog. Also, doing the riches during tea time just after lunch! wonderful idea!
