Summer School Plans and Schedule ...

Well, I've officially decided to do "Summer School Light" for the next several weeks.  It's a short schedule, which allows for plenty of play time and planning time for Momma (for next year), but it still hits the important points I want to cover.

Here's what we're doing this summer:
  • Continue reading lessons with The Princess (15 minutes, 3 times a week)
  • Continue Queen Language Lessons with The Hippie
  • Continue and finish our MONET study
  • Continue Outdoor Secrets
  • Focus on all four math processes via Arithmetic Village
  • Play math games for reinforcement and fun
  • Baking, cooking, painting, crafting as desired (no schedule here)
  • Continue reading aloud during the day (starting Twenty Jataka Tales today)
  • Continue reading aloud at night
  • The Hippie continues her leisure reading and handwork during Quiet Time
  • Attend the weekly summer events at the library on Tuesday afternoons
  • Thursday homeschool group days (beach, park, pool and field trips)
  • LOTS of FREE TIME for play
Here's how our "Summer School" schedule has been looking:

** This applies to Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Tuesday afternoon is our Library event (though the morning looks the same) and Thursday is our homeschool group fun stuff ~ no school at all on Thursdays. **

6:45 am ~ Momma rise, have tea, exercise, eat breakfast, start laundry, switch dishes while girls are still sleeping; Girls begin to wake between 7:30 and 8:00, but they do not come out until 8:15; they dress, make their bed and play quietly until time to come out

8:15 am ~ Morning Walk (we have do this as early as possible because it is so hot)

8:45/9:00 am ~ Momma showers, makes her bed and brushes her teeth while the girls eat breakfast, do their morning chores, brush their teeth and fix their hair

9:45 am ~ "School Time" (We've been getting started by about 9:45 or 10:00 am and our "school time" has only been about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half)

11:15 am ~ snack

11:30 am to 1:30 pm ~ Girls have FREE PLAY TIME while I get to do some planning (and whatever else I need to do)

2:15 pm ~ Day time read aloud

2:30 pm ~ Quiet time (my 6 year old sleeps sometimes and plays quietly in her bed other times; the Hippie reads and does crafts during this time; Momma gets more time for planning)

4:30 pm ~ snack and free time

6:30 pm ~ Dinner, clean up, shower, teeth, bedtime read aloud and bed between 8:00 and 8:30pm (girls, not me, of course)

I'm hoping that this schedule will allow for me to get pretty well organized before we start 1st and 3rd grades at the end of the summer.  I'm hoping the girls will also feel like they've had a "summer" and plenty of undirected time to do what they want.  But, I'm thankful that we'll also be spending some time on the basics each day ~ reading for the little one, math for both, copywork for the older one, nature study and art for us all.  It helps that the lessons are all FUN ... no real "work" in their eyes!

How do you spend your summer as a homeschooler?

  1. Wow, you make me feel so disorganized for summer. We have a few things to finish this summer, but it's probably going to be only twice a week. The rest of the time we are going to do field trips and swimming at my mom's house. Oh, and try to do more knitting with my oldest.

  2. Oh, PLEASE don't feel that way! I'm really NOT that organized. I'm TRYING. I swing from super mom days to do NOTHING days. These are things that I WANT to get done over the summer, and if I could just stick with the above mentioned schedule, it shouldn't be hard (I SHOULD be able to commit to ONE HOUR of school on most days, right?). Problem is, if I stay up late the night before or have a fun weekend or if it's that time of the month or if ANYTHING is out of the ordinary, I don't end up sticking with it. These are GOALS ... and, so far this week I've stuck to them. That's only TWO days so far, though. And, this morning I have one with sneezies and MOMMA is especially tired, so we'll see how today goes! LOL

  3. Goals, yes, goals. I need to have more of a plan this summer or fall is going to hit us like a freight train since I have two grades to do. Okay, new leaf, next week we are going to try to have more of a routine. You inspired me yet again! Blessings!
